Man With A Movie Tube, 6 minutes, 2007
While working on a video project early in 2007, I became aware that the vast video content available on YouTube could be downloaded, remixed, and uploaded back to YouTube. You could tell your own stories - spin your own narratives - from YouTube video clips. Man With A Movie Tube is a work-in-progress, my own attempt to tell a story from the enormous wealth of peer-produced video content on YouTube.
Hyperpeople, video, 62 minutes, 2005
Hyperpeople is an exploration of the "Big Three": Information, Knowledge and Power. I ask the question, "What happens after we're all connected?"
The visuals are by artist Chris Barnaby, and the sound design & digeredoo by Kevin Whitesides. This is the live presentation from MIND STATES 2005 in San Francisco.
Hyperpeople is also available in a high-quality version (suitable for video iPod) only on Bittorent. Click here to go to a page where you can download the .torrent file. If you haven't used Bittorrent before, go here to download the Bittorent software.
UNbomb, 6 minutes, 2003
The insurgency in Iraq began with the bombing of a UN news conference in August of 2003. A news camera recorded the entire event, and the raw camera footage showed up on the Internet a few days later. I took this footage and scored it against Tomaso Albioni's Adagio, one of the saddest pieces in the classical repertoire,
TRUE HALLUCINATIONS, an opera, premiering in 2008.
Working with various composers, I am writing the libretto for a full-length opera based on the extraordinary life and untimely death of Terence McKenna. Excerpts from TRUE HALLUCINATIONS were performed at MINDSTATES on 23 May 2003, and the entire work will have its premiere in 2008. (Hopefully.)
Here are three songs from TRUE HALLUCINATIONS: "The Incident", "Strophariad", and "Radiance".
This Strange Eventful History, video, 27 minutes, 2002.
Working with co-director Steven Piasecki, this film presents a Baraka-style mixture of images and sound, in an attempt to capture the unique flavor and spirit of the Burning Man festival held in August/September 2001.
Becoming Transhuman, video, 72 minutes, 2001.
Using "found" audio and video sources, Becoming Transhuman is a narrative of what-we-are-becoming, broken into three sections: an affirmation of the positive dimension of human growth, a recognition of the darker side of human nature, and a contemplation of our ever-more-precarious position. Becoming Transhuman premiered in May 2001 at MINDSTATES.
I consider Becoming Transhuman my finest work.
Becoming Transhuman is only available via Bittorrent. Click here to go to a page where you can download the .torrent file. If you haven't used Bittorent before, go here to download the Bittorent software.
DJ Christ, Superstar!, a rave opera, 1999.
Working with Paul Godwin and Tony Parisi, I co-wrote, directed and co-produced this adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice's Jesus Christ Superstar. Updating the music for turn-of-the-millennium idioms, we portrayed Jesus as the best DJ in the world, capable of laying down a groove that could send his followers to heaven. With a cast and crew of 55, it premiered to a standing-room-only crowd of 2500 at Burning Man 1999.
